Rwanda receives over 170 asylum seekers from Libya


Rwandan authorities on Wednesday, June 17, acquired 173 asylum seekers evacuated from Libya underneath the Emergency Transit Mechanism (ETM).

Based on the Ministry in Cost of Emergency Administration (MINEMA), the group includes 85 Sudanese, 66 Eritreans, seven Ethiopians, 12 South Sudanese, and two Somali nationals.

The asylum seekers have been acquired in partnership with the United Nations Refugee Company (UNHCR).

Greater than 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers evacuated from Libya and acquired in Rwanda since September 2019.

Based on the ministry, 2,623 of them have since been efficiently resettled in third international locations.

“Rwanda stays dedicated to providing refuge to individuals in want,” MINEMA mentioned in an announcement.

The ETM was established by a partnership between Rwanda, the African Union and UNHCR to offer non permanent safety to refugees and asylum seekers stranded in Libya.

The earlier group of asylum seekers arrived in February.

The asylum seekers are hosted on the Gashora Emergency Transit Centre in Bugesera District as they await resettlement and different long-term options.
