The federal government has allotted greater than Rwf149.8 billion within the 2026/2027 fiscal 12 months for the development of Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant, which has reached 68 per cent completion, in response to Rwanda Power Group (REG).

REG Chief Govt Officer, Armand Zingiro, stated development actions are progressing steadily, and the venture stays on monitor for energy technology by the top of 2027.

“We anticipate the principle development works to be accomplished by June 2027, after which the reservoir shall be crammed and testing actions will start,” Zingiro informed The New Instances.

“By December subsequent 12 months, we anticipate the plant to begin producing electrical energy. The actions are ongoing, with many of the required tools already on website whereas extra tools continues to be arriving.”

The 43.5-megawatt multipurpose hydropower venture on the Nyabarongo River is designed not solely to generate electrical energy but in addition to help irrigation on greater than 20,000 hectares of farmland, provide water, and mitigate flooding in downstream areas.

The venture is funded via a settlement signed between the governments of Rwanda and China in February 2020, underneath which the Export Import Financial institution of China is offering a concessional mortgage value $214 million to finance development.

The general venture value is estimated at greater than Rwf506 billion, together with over Rwf341 billion allotted to Engineering, Procurement and Development (EPC), greater than Rwf152 billion for expropriation, and over Rwf11 billion for supervision actions. Chinese language firm Sinohydro is the contractor for the venture.

Thus far, Rwf204.7 billion has already been spent on the venture, whereas Rwf149.8 billion is deliberate for the subsequent fiscal 12 months; 2026/2027.

Nyabarongo II is being constructed throughout Kamonyi, Gakenke, and Rulindo districts.

In response to the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Sources Board (RAB), the dam will help irrigation alongside the Nyabarongo, Akagera, and Akanyaru rivers, in addition to areas round Lakes Cyohoha and Rweru in Bugesera.
